Yesterday afternoon I attended a garden party with my husband in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. A design that my husband had done for the local hospital’s site had won a couple of prominent awards, and he was presenting them to the hospital in conjunction with a new scholarship fund raising effort by the hospital foundation. While at the party my husband introduced me to Carl who, along with his wife, owns a home in the area constructed around a log cabin which was built in 1795. All of a sudden our 108 year old house didn’t seem so old!

It was fascinating to talk to this couple and learn about the arrowheads and civil war cannon balls that have been found on the property. Carl’s father bought the house and farm in 1925 and it has been owned by the family since that time. Unfortunately it was vacant for the 10 years after his dad died, but Carl moved back to the house in 2004 upon his retirement. He and his remaining siblings have set up a heritage corporation to preserve the history of the house and the property. We have an invitation to tour the home the next time we go down to Cape Girardeau. You can bet that is one offer I won’t pass on!
