House & Garden Tour

House & Garden Tour

This past Sunday we had an opportunity to share the history of our home with 350 people! We participated in a house and garden tour featuring 6 homes and gardens plus an additional 5 gardens. The tour was a fundraiser for the people of Haiti. Our community was established in 1896, so there are a lot of historic properties in the area. What makes the tours here so much fun is that all the homes are very unique.

In preparation for the tour we took quite of few photographs of the original homeowners, as well as changes made to the house through the years, and reproduced them onto large poster boards. We placed these on 5 easels throughout the house and gardens out back. We got a lot of positive feedback on these, as normally if a homeowner puts out anything at all it is a photo album that people have to crowd around. It was even fun for us to look back on the condition of the house when we first bought it.

While it was a lot of work to make sure that not only the house but the gardens were in tip top shape for the tour, it was so much fun talking to the people on the tour. The fact that they were highly complimentary of the changes we had made was an added bonus. A number of them are in the process of researching the history of their houses, so we discussed the different approaches they had taken. At the end of the day over $5,500 was raised to support education and medical supplies for Haiti, which I think is awesome.

If you are ever asked to be on a tour, I highly recommend that you think about participating. What a way to share the history of your home!
