I recently learned that a woman down the street was born and raised in the house she currently lives in. She is 98 years old, and apparently her father was a fairly prominent artist. In fact some of his work hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. I understand that the Missouri Historical Society has interviewed her due to her fascinating background. But it occurred to me that she lived on Maple when the Morton family, who built my house, lived here. I wonder what she knows about my family, if anything? Even if she didn’t know them personally, I have heard that she definitely remembers a lot about what this area looked like as she was growing up.

I am in the process of obtaining permission to interview her so I can document her memories. Won’t that add some fascinating color to the story of my house? In fact, I think our local historical society should be interviewing all of our oldest citizens to tap into their knowledge about our community before it is too late.

Who are or were the neighbors to your house? Can you interview them?
